Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is a highly effective, specialised shampoo designed to relieve the uncomfortable symptoms of persistent dandruff.

Contrary to popular belief, dandruff isn’t always caused by dry skin. Another reason you may experience dandruff could actually be due to your skin reacting to an overpopulation of naturally occurring bacteria or fungi. When this happens, you may benefit from incorporating an anti-fungal shampoo into your hair care routine.

When it comes to shampoos in this category, one of our best-sellers is Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo.

Who is Nizoral Anti-Dandruff For?

Adults whose scaly scalp is caused by a fungal infection, rather than dry skin. If you’re unsure if this applies to you, speak to your doctor for advice on the cause of your scaly scalp. The shampoo is also hypoallergenic, meaning that it is suitable for even the most sensitive skin, including for people living with Eczema and Psoriasis.

How does Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo work?

Enriched with a 1% solution of a powerful anti-fungal, Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is specifically designed to relieve the flaking, scaling, itching and inflammation that is associated with dandruff.

This anti-fungal works by preventing the growth of fungus and restoring the skin’s natural balance. It targets the overproduction of P. Ovale fungi, and is strong enough to continue working long after the shampoo has been rinsed off.

It is safe for ages 12 and up and typically only needed for 8 weeks to initially get your condition under control.

Top Tip:

You can also use this shampoo every 1-2 weeks even when you don’t have flare ups to stop your dandruff returning.

How should Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo be used?

Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is not designed for everyday use, but should be applied every 3-4 days for between 2 and 4 weeks. If problems persist beyond 4 weeks, consult your specialist or pharmacist.

Wet the hair and apply a little of the shampoo to your scalp. Massage into a lather and allow it to absorb into the scalp for 3 – 5 minutes. Then rinse your hair and scalp well.

Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo can be used together with your normal shampoo if you have especially thick hair or need to wash it more regularly.

This shampoo is considered safe for expecting or nursing mothers to use but check with your doctor if unsure.

If you are frequently using a steroidal lotion or cream to treat dandruff, it’s best to gradually lower your use in the 2 – 3 weeks before starting to use this shampoo. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if in doubt.

Side effects

Although the shampoo is considered hypoallergenic, in very rare cases (1 in 10 000), the use of Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo can lead to skin reactions on the scalp, such as itching, irritation, blistering, or burning sensations. It also rarely causes changes in hair colour or texture, rash, increased tear production, eye irritation, or skin inflammation.

There are no reported interactions with other medicinal products.

Scientific Research

What do the HelloSkin Experts Say?

Though we didn’t find any specific data on Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo, we do know that the active ingredient -Ketoconazole- has shown benefits in people with seborrheic dermatitis. A 1% -Ketoconazole- shampoo used three times per week for 8 weeks was shown to effectively reduce both scaling and itch compared with before the treatment, and the efficacy was reported to be maintained one month after patients stopped using the shampoo (1).
