Description

Hydromol Ointment is an odourless, colourless, moisturising emollient that smoothens, softens and protects the skin.

It is especially useful in cases of very dry, cracked or flaky skin, caused by lack of moisture in the outer layers of the skin cells. It may also be used in the management of eczema and psoriasis.

The ointment is classed as an ‘occlusive’, which means it forms a ‘barrier’ layer of oil on the skin’s surface, preventing water loss through evaporation and effectively sealing moisture in. It is ideal for use as part of your regular night-time routine, and can also be used under wet wraps.

The ointment is easily absorbed by dry skin and, when applied regularly, it will help to make the skin feel softer and more flexible.

Because of its lack of fragrance, colourings, or preservatives, and the absence of the ingredient Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), the ointment is extremely well-tolerated even by the most sensitive skin. This means it can be used by most adults and children without causing irritation.

Hydromol can even be used in place of soap, producing a soft, creamy wash for people with particularly sensitive skin, and/or with poor tolerance of commercial soaps; you can also use it as a moisturising bath additive.

The smoothing and softening effect of this ointment may also assist with the absorption of other preparations and medicines applied to the skin, such as when eczema sufferers need anti-inflammatory, corticosteroid creams.

Directions

Apply Hydromol Ointment regularly at night time for best results. It should be applied directly to areas of dry skin in the direction of hair growth to prevent blocking hair follicles. If using in place of soap, put a small amount in your hand and lather in warm water before applying to the skin; afterwards, gently pat the skin dry to avoid rubbing the oil off.

Precautions

Hydromol Ointment is for external use only and contact with the eyes should be avoided. Do not use it if you have a known allergy or sensitivity to any of the ingredients. Stop using the emollient immediately if you believe you have experienced an allergic reaction.

Hydromol Ointment is not harmful for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers. However, always consult your doctor before using the product while pregnant.

If used as a bath or shower additive, take care to avoid slipping when getting in or out, as the oil may cause surfaces to be extra slippery.

If used with other medicated skin cream or lotion, apply the ointment first and wait about 30 minutes before applying the additional product, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

Side Effects

Hydromol Ointment is extremely well tolerated by most users. However, if you are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients, skin irritation may occur. Please check the list of ingredients before use.

Scientific Research

helloskin.co.uk### For people with Psoriasis

The experts at HelloSkin were not able to find clinical data on the benefits of Hydromol Ointment on psoriatic lesions. But, Hydromol Ointment contains liquid paraffin and yellow soft paraffin, that helps prevent water vanishing from the skin surface, which is accelerated in psoriatic lesions compared to healthy skin (1).

For people with Eczema

HelloSkin’s experts were unable to find clinical data on the benefits of Hydromol Ointment on atopic dermatitis. However, the product contains yellow soft paraffin, that helps prevent water evaporating from the skin surface.

In atopic dermatitis, water loss from the upper skin layer is linked to a reduced skin barrier function (2), which makes the skin more susceptible to external triggers and can therefore lead to a worsening of the condition (3).

Hydromol ointment is one of the emollients currently tested in an ongoing study with children suffering from atopic dermatitis (4).
