Eucerin Intensive Lotion uses the body’s own natural hydrating agents to manage extremely dry, itchy, or scaly skin.

Dry skin is the result of a lack of water in the stratum corneum (the outer skin layers), where urea helps to retain water from deeper layers of the skin in healthy individuals. When urea is lost due to a skin condition, the skin becomes dehydrated, loses suppleness, and may become cracked, scaly, and itchy.

A lack of sebum on the skin’s surface also accelerates evaporation of moisture, and exacerbates the problem of dry skin.

The presence of urea and lactate in Eucerin Intensive Lotion allows the skin to trap more moisture and restore hydration levels. With the lotion restoring a fine surface layer of oil to the skin, it also slows down evaporation and moisture loss. This, and the natural exfoliation of scaly and dry skin, restores smoothness and suppleness.

In cases where dry and scaling skin is not the result of inflammation, using Eucerin Intensive Lotion daily should reduce redness and itching, and improve skin tension.

It is suitable for a range of conditions including xeroderma, atopic eczema, hyperkeratosis, and ichthyosis; however, do not use on broken or inflamed skin.

Do not apply this lotion within half an hour of other medicated ointments, creams and lotions.

Breastfeeding or pregnant women can generally use this lotion safely; but breastfeeding mothers should take care not to apply the lotion to the breasts before feeding, to avoid ingestion by the baby.

Scientific Research

For people with Psoriasis

The HelloSkin experts were not able to find clinical studies that have examined the benefits of Eucerin Intensive Lotion on psoriatic lesions. But, the product contains urea, which in concentrations of 10% can help break down the outer skin layer. Additionally, urea attracts and retains water in the upper skin layers, and may also be helpful in maintaining a healthy skin barrier in other ways (1). In dry skin disorders, such as psoriasis, water loss from the upper skin layer is associated with a reduced skin barrier function. This may worsen the disease symptoms (2).

Eucerin Intensive Lotion also contains glycerol, which appears naturally inside the skin. In the skin, glycerol functions by attracting water from the deeper layers and bind water in the skin, which provides a moisturising effect (3).

Also, the lotion contains lactic acid, a component in the natural moisturising factor in the upper skin layer that was shown to be decreased in psoriatic lesions compared with healthy skin, and that serves to keep the upper skin layers well-hydrated (4). The light liquid paraffin helps reduce water from vanishing from the skin surface. Water evaporation is increased in psoriatic conditions when comparing with normal skin (5).

For people with Eczema

HelloSkin’s experts were unable to find studies that have examined the benefits of Eucerin Intensive Cream in atopic dermatitis. However, the product contains urea which is known to attract and retain water in the upper skin layer and may also help to maintain a functional skin barrier in other ways (1).

The product also contains glycerol which also occurs naturally in the skin and helps attract and bind water and thereby also provide a moisturising effect (3).

Furthermore, the product contains lactic acid, also a component of the natural moisturising factor in the upper skin layer that have been shown to be reduced in eczematous compared with healthy skin (6). The light liquid paraffin helps reduce water from evaporating from the skin surface. In dry skin conditions, including atopic dermatitis, water loss from the upper skin layer is linked to a reduced skin barrier function, which may be worsening the disease symptoms (2).
