Description

Aveeno Skin Relief Restore and Protect Hand Cream is another addition in the long line of moisturising products from the Aveeno range. These all use the well-documented properties of oatmeal to help relieve dry skin conditions.

This cream is formulated for use on the hands, using a unique triple oatmeal complex (colloidal oatmeal) (including finely‐milled oatmeal, oat oil, and oat essence) to bring relief to the relatively common problem of dry, itchy, irritable skin on the hands.

The oatmeal works by helping to restore the skin’s natural protective ‘barrier’, which is a fine layer on the skin’s surface that reduces moisture loss through evaporation. This can become damaged due to a skin condition, and this cream can help protect the hands, as well as providing immediate relief from irritation caused by chapped, dry skin.

The intense moisturising effect of this hand cream lasts for up to 24 hours and, with regular use, the skin will soften and feel less tight and healthier. It is easily absorbed and fragrance-free.

Scientific Research

For people with Psoriasis

HelloSkin’s experts were unable to find clinical data on the use of Aveeno Skin Relief Restore and Protect Hand Cream in psoriasis. However, the product contains glycerin, petrolatum, colloidal oatmeal and ceramides.

Glycerin partly work by attracting and retaining water from the deeper skin layers, thereby helping hydrating and moisturising the skin (1), and petrolatum also forms a lipid barrier that reduces water evaporation across the skin surface.

In dry skin conditions, psoriasis included, water evaporation is increased compared with normal skin (2), and water loss from the upper skin layer is linked to a reduced skin barrier function, which may be worsening the disease symptoms (3).

Colloidal oatmeal has been shown to improve skin dryness, scaling, roughness and itch intensity in women with mild to moderate itch and moderate to severe dry skin (4).

Another study similarly found that a colloidal oatmeal-containing emollient compared with its vehicle had significant benefits on people with extremely dry skin (5).

Ceramides are lipids found naturally in high concentrations in the cells of the upper skin layer, and are essential for the proper function of healthy skin (6).

For people with Eczema

HelloSkin’s experts were unable to find clinical data on the effects of Aveeno Skin Relief Restore & Protect Hand Cream in people with atopic eczema. However, the product contains glycerin, petrolatum, colloidal oatmeal and ceramides.

In a study of people with atopic dermatitis a ceramide containing cleanser and moisturiser was applied twice daily for 6 weeks, and was shown to reduce disease severity and itching compared with before the treatment (9).
