Thickened skin from Eczema

Thickening of the skin (also called lichenification)

It is a common phenomena in persistent or chronic atopic dermatitis. Growth of specific skin cells called keratinocytes and stratum corneum, in combination with changes in the collagen of the underlying skin, causes lichenified areas of skin to appear as thickened leathery plaques. They are a result of the damage caused by recurrent scratching and rubbing of the skin.
