Self-care tips for psorasis

Despite going to see your GP for medications for psoriasis, there are plenty of self-care tips to try and reduce symptoms by yourself. Some of these could turn into long-term solutions to help relieve symptoms, as well as improve your overall health. Here are 4 tips to consider:

1. Keep skin moisturised

Try and keep your skin constantly hydrated with lotions suitable for skin conditions. Dry skin can cause itchiness and inflammation; therefore, keeping on top of your skincare routine is important.

2. Don’t bathe too often

It is recommended not to take too many baths or showers as hot water can dry out your skin by stripping it of its natural oils. If you are adamant that you need to take a shower or bathe every day, be sure that the water isn’t too hot and you can also add some Bath Oils for Psoriasis to your bath! 

3. Quit smoking

Studies have shown that those who smoke large quantities of cigarettes are more likely to develop severe cases of psoriasis than those who don’t. Kick the habit; you may be doing yourself an injustice with your psoriasis condition. Not only that, but there are larger health risks associated with smoking which may be irreversible.

4. Relieve stress

There are plenty of stress relievers to consider when trying to cope with psoriasis. Stress is a major factor in increasing the severity of symptoms, meaning it is essential to keep relaxed and stress-free.

Go for a massage – Not only do massages ease tension, but it is a real treat to look forward to. When booking, ask if the therapist has ever dealt with psoriasis sufferers or perhaps look for a company which deals primarily with those suffering from psoriasis.

Relaxation techniques – Try meditation, deep breathing and simple exercise routines to keep yourself calm and motivated for the day ahead.

Don’t take on too much – Although life can get extremely busy, try not to overdo things. Exhaustion and tiredness will only escalate stress levels and irritability, so it's best to only take on as much as you can physically and mentally manage. If you are struggling, reach out to a friend or loved one and see if they can help you out with your daily errands.
