Dead Sea Salt/Mud (Eczema)

Dead sea water contains a greater amount of chloride, magnesium, sodium, calcium, potassium, bromide, sulfate and bicarbonate than other seas around the world. The water is believed to have moisturising properties, especially because of the high concentration of magnesium, which is believed to help the skin retain water1.

Level of evidence: C

One study in subjects with known atopic dermatitis showed that submerging the forearm in 5% Dead Sea salt solution compared with tap water for a period of 6 weeks every day for 15 minutes, improved skin barrier function, and skin hydration, redness and roughness2.

The concentration of an ingredient is important for its efficacy, and therefore products containing the same ingredient may not necessarily have the same effect as in the studies mentioned above.
