Colloidal Oatmeal (Eczema)

Colloidal oatmeal is produced by grinding and boiling oats, and is available in various formulations from bath products to moisturisers. Colloidal oatmeal contains a number of different natural components that are believed to be responsible for its diverse functional properties.

Level of evidence: B

In a recent study, the effectiveness of a 1% colloidal oatmeal cream was compared with a prescription barrier cream in children with mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis1. After using the creams twice daily for 3 weeks the results showed that the colloidal oatmeal cream was equally effective as the prescription barrier cream, and improved both the severity and the itch over time2. In laboratory models, extracts of colloidal oatmeal has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities3,4.

The concentration of an ingredient is important for its efficacy, and therefore products containing the same ingredient may not necessarily have the same effect as in the studies mentioned above.
