Allantoin (Psoriasis)

Allantoin is an emollient known to improve dry or scaly skin and increase the skin’s barrier function. Furthermore, allantoin has keratolytic effect, meaning that it increases the water content of the space between the skin cells, thereby facilitating peeling (desquamation) of thickened skin layers often seen in plaque psoriasis.

What does the science say?

Level of evidence: D

HelloSkin’s experts were unable to find any scientific data or clinical trials regarding the use of allantoin in people with psoriasis.

Nevertheless one study have shown, that allantoin is capable of increasing wound healing and re-establishing normal skin upon lesions1.

The concentration of an ingredient is important for its efficacy, and therefore products containing the same ingredient may not necessarily have the same effect as in the studies mentioned above.
